If you are looking for a team on the rise that could see a lot of improvement in the next couple of years, then the New York Jets could be the team for you. Last year’s season was looking to go the way of Trevor Lawrence. Clemson’s respected QB was undoubtedly the number 1 draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. With that in mind, it looked for the longest of time that the Jets would have their franchise QB for the future. This seemed to be the case with a 0-14 record entering Week 15, but Adam Gase didn’t want to end his stint as an NFL coach with a 0-16 record. This resulted in them losing the 1st pick overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. With Adam Gase being fired, their new Head Coach Robert Saleh comes in with expertise on the defensive side. With the 2nd overall pick in 2021, NFL draft Jets selected Zach Wilson. The future will show if Zach Wilson can be the next big thing since Joe Broadway Namath who retired in 1977. The QB drought could be over with Wilson but wins this season could still be hard to come by.
The New York Jets will play in their 52nd season in the National Football League, and their starting roster is missing many important pieces. Jets defense during 2020 was far from elite, and to find them in the top 20 last year was hard to come by. They allowed 28.6 PPG coming in at the 25th worst defense in this category. But young players such as Quinnen Williams, Folorunse Fatukasi, and John Franklin-Myers all ranked among the top 35 interior defenders in the NFL in overall grade last season. This is promising for the future, especially when considering free agency signings. Robert Saleh emphasized improving the unit with Sheldon Rankins, Vinny Curry, and Carl Lawson. Lawson especially should provide much-needed pass-rushing ability off the edge. Carl Lawson even leads the NFL as a pass rusher on true pass-rushing snaps.
The Offense should be very close to the following roster.
- QB – Zach Wilson (rookie)
- RB – Tevin Coleman, Michael Carter (rookie), Lamical Perine
- WR – Corey Davis, Denzel Mims, Elijah Moore (rookie), Jamison Crowder
- TE – Christopher Herndon, Ryan Griffin
This season is all about keeping Wilson healthy and continue to improve as he adjusts to the pace of the National Football League. Wilson should see a good amount of production from his running backs. This will help him regarding the pass rush. The trio of free-agent signing Corey Davis, Denzel Mims, Elijah Moore, and Jamison Crowder showed signs of excellence with Sam Darnold as QB.
To help Robert Saleh secure an impressive 1st season as a head coach, he has worked with 11 of the 13 coordinators and position coaches. The offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, brother to Matt LaFleur HC in Green Bay, has worked with Saleh before. Jeff Ulbrich is in charge of the defense, who will lead the defense for the first time as a defensive coordinator. The Jets haven’t won the Super Bowl since 1968, and 2021 shouldn’t change this as for Zach Wilson and Robert Saleh, this should be a developing year.
