United States vs Canada Match Preview
After their superb Gold Cup success last month, the USNMT turn their attention to the qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where an opening fixture against cross-border rivals Canada awaits on matchday one.
The USA haven’t made the tournament proper since their run to the Last 16 at Brazil 2014, however, the buzz around the team’s qualification prospects is different this time around.
Gregg Berhalter’s roster is lavishly sprinkled with technically gifted, exciting performers – most of whom didn’t feature when the USA beat Canada 1-0 in the Group Stage of the Gold Cup back in July.
European based stars like Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic, Wolfsburg’s John Brooks, Barcelona’s Sergino Dest, Juventus’ Weston McKennie, RB Leipzig’s Tyler Adams, Norwich City’s Josh Sargent and Dortmund’s Giovanni Reyna were all conspicuous by their absence at the Gold Cup, though every one of those big-hitters are available against the same opponents this time around.
Canada meanwhile, are bidding to make it to the World Cup for the first time since Tony Waiters’ trailblazers flew the flag in Mexico back in 1986, though The Canucks lack the depth and class of their neighbors to the south.
Bayern Munich wonderkid Alphonso Davies remains the star attraction, though the 20-year-old can’t take on the USA and the world on his own and his supporting cast are frustratingly below his standard.

United States vs Canada Picks
United States to Win -200 (DraftKings)
With a clutch of returning European-based players adding layers of quality to their squad, the USA look like the strongest team in the World Cup Qualification CONCACAF section and we’re picking the USMNT to get their campaign off to a winning start against Canada.
The USA have lost just one of their last 19 matches in all competitions – a run made all the more impressive when you consider the number of key men Gregg Berhalter has had to plan without.
A full complement of players should make the USA an even more formidable opponent for a Canadian team that were effectively beaten by a second-string USMNT last month, so back the Stars and Stripes to prevail at -200 with Draftkings.
Over 1.5 United States Team Goals at 8/11 (1.73) (bet365)
The USA were modest goal-scorers on their run to Gold Cup glory earlier this season, but with their edge sharpened with the return of a lengthy list of household names, we expect to see a more expansive showing this week.
Before their Gold Cup adventure with a weakened squad, the USMNT went on a run of scoring at least three times in eight out of nine home assignments, which was a jaw-droppingly impressive return in the final third.
With Christian Pulisic and Giovanni Reyna in tow, the USA will wield the two best attacking players on the pitch in Kansas City, and that in turn makes the over 1.5 USA team goals market a price worth pursuing at 8/11 with bet365.
