Philadelphia Union vs New York Red Bulls Match Preview
Jim Curtin’s Philadelphia Union finished five places and six points ahead of New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference’s regularly campaign, though their 2021 MLS Cup Playoff playoff clash on Saturday could be a closer run thing than their final league placings suggest.
Momentum is a powerful force in football and both Philadelphia Union and NYRB have plenty of it to draw from ahead of this weekend’s crucial encounter.
Union lost just once of their final 11 assignments of the campaign – a sequence that was enough to clinch second spot in the Eastern Conference behind runaway winners New England Revolution, while the Red Bulls were beaten just once in their last 12 games on their late dash across the line.
Head Coach Gerhard Struber would have been thrilled with his team’s late rally, though NYRB haven’t beaten Union in any of the clubs’ previous six encounters and they will kick-off the contest at Subaru Park as underdogs.
Nevertheless, we don’t expect NYRB to play second fiddle in what should develop into a game decided by fine margins in Chester, though the outcome of the fixture could be decided by the head-to-head individual duel between compatriots Kacper Przybylko and Patryk Klimala.
Polish striker Przybylko and fellow Pole Klimala are the leading marksmen for Union and Red Bulls respectively and attackers look like potential match-winners for their teams.
