A run through the NFC East
The NFC East is currently holding an NFL Record as there have been no repeat division winners since 2004, 16 years. This is the longest active streak among divisions in the NFL as well as the longest in league history.
There is no doubt that the Dallas Cowboys are a better team top to bottom when quarterback Dak Prescott is on the field. Hence, the fact that he will be returning healthy after a serious ankle injury in addition to scoring a long-term contract puts the team at a complete advantage. Dallas also had the fourth-best protection rate (90%) last season, a significant positive for Prescott’s health. He was second in the league with 8.4 yards per attempt and fifth in accuracy rating (7.8) over the five games he played. Outside of the freak ankle injury, last season Prescott has managed to stay healthy. So securing Dak on a long-term contract should stabilize the NFC East for the next couple of years.
With powerful playmakers like WRs Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb to target, Prescott’s passing attack will no doubt be effective in 2021, and once that is true again, that allows star RB Zeke Elliott to start taking over games in the second half the way he used to do consistently.
The Cowboys defense, especially the secondary, could use an upgrade, but Dallas should be like Kansas City Chiefs where they outscore their opponents as a result of the talent on offense. I see Dallas score an average of 30 points per game this season and despite a lackluster of defense, that should be enough for 10 to 11 wins.
Washington Football Team
As heartwarming a story as QB Alex Smith made under center. The team released last season’s Comeback Player of the Year this offseason, as well as Dwayne Haskins, the young quarterback who never could achieve the level of play he was expected to deliver.
Now the team lists Kyle Allen and Ryan Fitspatrick. Both QB´s surely does not provide Washington with a long-term solution to that ongoing positional hole. Ryan Fitspatrick have a solid history of lifting his team but
Regardless of who starts as QB in Washington, the front office needed to improve their offensive line to help their starting QB. In the 2nd round with the 51st pick, they selected OT Samuel Cosmi. Washington’s strength is its defensive line and Rivera wants to build his offensive line in a similar way.
With Cosmi joining Moses on RT, alongside Ereck Flowers, Chase Roullier, and Brandon Scherff, Washington might be on to something in its bid to defend its NFC East title. But in Ron Rivera´s 2nd year as HC i don´t see WFT win the NFC East as long as Dak is healthy. Washington Football Team should have trouble in having a successful two-minute offense as they lack offensive weapons to help Fitsmagic.
The Indianapolis Colts and the Eagles have agreed to a trade with QB Carson Wentz, now going to Indy to play with his old head coach Frank Reich, so now the up-and-down Jalen Hurts takes over the starting role for the Eagles.
Last season as a rookie, Hurts started four games and posted a 1-3 record, throwing 77 completions for just over a thousand yards and six touchdowns with four interceptions. However, his completion percentage was just 52, and his passer rating was 77.6.
New Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni will have to start from scratch offensively, and with the 10th overall pick they selected this years Heismann winner DeVonta Smith. DeVonta Smith led the NCAA in receptions (117), receiving yards (1,856) and receiving TDs (23) en route to a Heisman Trophy last season. The Eagles’ wide receivers combined for 2,082 receiving yards last season, the third fewest in the NFL behind the New England Patriots (2,063) and the Baltimore Ravens (1729) but with Lamar Jackson at QB the Ravens doesn’t need the same production from their WR.
So Smith should be an instant success as long as his size doesn’t hinder him to much. I still see the Eagles having some below 0,500 years with Nick Sirianni having to create his own style of offense before we see Hurts succeed in the NFL. In only his 2nd season the chance of him improving enough for the Eagles to contest for the division title seems far gone.
New York Giants
After their 6-10 season in 2020, the Giants are just hoping to field a healthy team again, the injury to star running back Saquon Barkley seeming to take the wind out of the team’s offensive sails, directly affecting their ability to score and win games.
Another key factor for the Giants will be the ongoing development of their young franchise quarterback Daniel Jones, who in his sophomore season in 2020 posted a 5-9 record after completing 280 passes for almost 3,000 yards and 11 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.
Some speedy targets for ‘Danny Dimes’ would be helpful. To help their QB the NY Giants selected Kadarius Toney. The 20th overall selection in April’s draft out of the University of Florida has not practiced much this spring or summer for a wide range of circumstances. The disclosure of an injury that Judge declined to offer specifics explains why the wide receiver didn’t participate in practice much this past week.
With trouble already looming for the only wide receiver selected in this year’s draft it could prove to be another learning year for Daniel Jones as he miraculously managed to fumble the ball 11 times last season with 6 lost fumbles. With his low touchdown to interception ratio Daniel Jones can´t afford to lose the ball this much. I would need to see a historic year from Saquon Barkley before the Giants have a chance to win the NFC East.
Why Dallas will win the NFC East this season
After posting their worst record, since they went 4–12 back in 2015, Dallas (6–10) aims to avoid back-to-back losing seasons. America’s team has not had a below 0,500 season back to back since 2002.
Dallas is hoping they should be able to count on Ezekiel Elliott once again. Elliott averaged 107.4 total yards, with six touchdowns, over five games with Prescott under center. He averaged 78.0 total yards and scored just twice, over 10 games without him. The entire offense gets a boost with Prescott’s return. The added factor of Dak´s impressive speed and talent in the run is another factor that should help Elliott to average close to 100 yards per game this season.
Why Dallas will win the NFC East this season is partly due to players resigned, primarily Dak with good signings in the off-season with Brent Urban and Tarell Basham. The draft picks included a very important linebacker in Micah Parsons and cornerback Kelvin Joseph. Two positions the Cowboys needed to improve. The Cowboys can simply outscore most teams and put their opponents’ offense under pressure. In the 6 divisional games, only Washington Football Team should be able to compete with the talent Cowboys possesses on offense. I see the Cowboys having a good season as long as Dak stays healthy and we should see the NFL Record extended to 17 years.
