Although the Yankees were allowed to return to baseball on Friday, they will be missing their best players due to covid-19. The players added in the covid-19 injured list include Gio Urshela, Aaron Judge, and their catcher Kyle Higashioka who are most likely to miss more than ten days. After the recent 2021 Yankee Covid-19 outbreak, more players are expected to take serious precautions across the U.S
The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox played their game on Friday night, after the Thursday postponement. The postponement was as a result of three Yankee pitchers testing positive for Covi-19. The pitchers included Jonathan Loaisiga, Nestor Cortes Jr., and Wandy Peralta. However, after the M.L.B. tested players and other individuals at the All-Star Game, it did not record more positive cases.
Following Friday’s testing, M.L.B. confirmed that the series would continue, and the postponed games would resume on 17th August in a doubleheader.
New York Yankees Team News
Following the recent baseball COVID-19 outbreak, most affected Yankee players are preparing to return to the field. According to manager Aaron Boone, Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery were supposed to come out of Covid-19 related injury to play the next two games for the Yankees
Cole was scheduled to face the Angels on Monday, while Montgomery was to play against the Red Sox on Tuesday in one half of a header.
Amidst the ongoing pandemic, Judge has recorded an on-base slugging percentage of .901, 21 home runs, and 13 doubles. On the other hand, Urshela has .756 O.P.S., 11 home runs, and 14 doubles. The Yankees, who lag behind the Red Sox in the American League East, also sent infielder Luke Voit on the injured list after suffering a knee inflammation. The injury is expected to extend up to July 13.
The injuries led to the team calling up Hoy Park, Chris Gittens, Greg Allen, and Rob Brantly from the minor leagues. As a result, Boone had to play without Judge and Urshela during the Boston match. “We have to go make the best of it. Those are two obviously great players, really important for what we do. We have to make do with what we have.” he said.
In other news, Gary Sanchez has already started his double-A rehab assignment and could be featured in the red sox game.
Vaccination Controversy
In the past, vaccinated New York Yankee players have tested positive for Covid-19 with a so-called “breakthrough” infection. However, the team has stated that the Friday positive tests were not due to the baseball covid breakthrough, meaning some players missed the vaccination. But the team has failed to identify which players got the jab or didn’t.
According to Manager Boone, some Yankee players with Covid-19 had symptoms but did not develop any serious issues. “No one has gotten really ill,” the manager said.
During the All-Star match in Denver, Judge made contact with most of the Yankee’s super players, raising concerns that the players may have been exposed. Five Red Sox All-Stars who shared a clubhouse with Judge were among the exposed. All five were active on Friday, including three position players in that group.
Together with Major League Baseball, other officials have been looking into Juge’s close contacts during the All-Star festivities. The monitoring process will ensure they conduct tests if need be. As of Friday afternoon, no more players were added to the Covid-19 list apart from the six Yankee stars.
Another dilemma was recorded when the Yankees shortstop star, Gleyber Torres, tested positive and missed seven games. But his case was different because he recorded both positive and negative results within two days. The M.L.B.experts then concluded that Torres had a mild case that could not pose the risk of him spreading the virus to other players.
The Yankee Health and Safety Guidelines
According to reports, the Yankees have hit the target 85 percent vaccination threshold. With 85%, teams can enjoy more relaxed covid-19 protocols in the field. Let me explain how it works. The 85% threshold is a protocol to ensure more than 85 percent of top-level individuals have been vaccinated. The individuals include coaches, players, and those who make daily contact with them.
This is the second Covi-19 outbreak for the Yankees, who have put various covid policies in their Stadium. Although tough protocols such as proof of negative covid-19 test and complete covid-19 vaccination ceased to apply from August, the following measures still apply.
Face covering Protocols
Although it’s not a must, C.D.C. and New York State Department of Health advise fully vaccinated guests to wear face coverings most of the time.
On the other hand, any guest who is three years or older and is not fully vaccinated must cover their nose and mouth while visiting the Yankee stadium. Guests should also note that facial shields must be accompanied by a facial field while in the Stadium.
Mobile Ticketing
Due to the Covid-19 concerns, technologies such as digital/mobile have been implemented in the Yankee stadium. For instance, all tickets are delivered digitally and are accessible through the MLB Ballpark mobile application..
Cashless Transactions
The officials confirmed that they had reduced contact between cash and food. Now, all Yankee Stadium food outlets operate using cashless methods such as debit cards or credit cards. Additionally, the team has designated various points for mobile ordering, and Uber Eats pickups.
There are also three cash conversion spots offering free prepaid debit cards starting from a $1 denomination for those who prefer cash payments. Guests can use the prepaid debit card at any station inside the Stadium. In case the funds remain, they can use them in any outlet accepting Mastercards.
