New York Red Bulls vs Philadelphia Union Match Preview

New York Red Bulls upset the odds to claim three points along with the local bragging rights when they defeated rivals New York City FC at the weekend, however, now that the euphoria from their Hudson River Derby victory has faded, the pressure is on to produce again when Philadelphia Union visit New Jersey on Wednesday.

With seven points between them and the line, the New York Red Bulls still have an uphill battle to keep their 11-year streak of consecutive Audi MLS Cup Playoff appearances alive.

Games are running out fast and only a string of victories will do for the Red Bulls, starting with Wednesday’s crucial clash against 4th placed Philadelphia.

Union are enjoying a productive campaign, however, despite their lofty position, they are just one sour result away from dropping out of the playoff positions, something the coach Jim Curtin will be desperate to avoid.

Successive home wins over Orlando City (3-1) and Atalanta (1-0) have strengthened Philly’s hand, however, they have won just twice on the road this season and their away form has at times, threatened to jeopardize their progress.

In Kacper Przybylko – who has scored three goals in two matches and nine overall this term – Union have one of the MLS’s most dangerous attackers however, and the German hit the net at the Red Bull Arena when Union won 3-1 at that venue a year ago.

Indeed, Philadelphia’s recent record against New York RB is strong and they were beaten just once in their last seven meetings with the Red Bulls since 2019. That head-to-head superiority could hand Union the initiative again on Wednesday.

New York Red Bulls vs Philadelphia Union Picks

Philadelphia Union Double Chance @ 8/13 (bet365)

New York Red Bulls will be bouncing following their derby win over NYCFC, though the club’s infamous boom-bust cycle could well continue when a formidable Philadelphia Union outfit visit Harrison this week.

Union have won four of their last five encounters with NYRB and that record is difficult to ignore. Philly have already taken four points off New York RB in two previous meetings this season and they could be worth backing to avoid defeat against them again on Wednesday.

NYRB dropped points in six of their last seven MLS home assignments and we think another evening of disappointment on their own patch could follow later this week.

Under 2.5 Goals -115 (DraftKings)

New York RB’s problems at home have been rooted in their inability to score goals and Head Coach Gerhard Struber just hasn’t been able to develop an attacking formula that works.

Defensively, Red Bulls have been relatively sound however and as a result, many of their fixtures on home soil have been low on excitement.

Seven of their last eight matches at the Red Bull Arena produced under 2.5 goals and it’s also worth noting that each of NYRB’s meetings with Union this term fell below the same totals line.

We’re tipping their latest encounter to be decided by similarly slim margins, so stick to under 2.5 goals with DraftKings.
