USMNT star Josh Sargent scores twice on full Norwich debut

New Canaries star Josh Sargent was in flying form on his full debut for Norwich City on Tuesday when the USMNT attacker hit two of his team’s goals and claimed one assist in his team’s resounding 6-0 victory over Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup.

Sargent notched Norwich’s fourth and six goals at Carrow Road in the 49th and 75th minute, taking a pair of relatively straightforward chances with aplomb. The 21-year-old also squeezed in an assist for teammate Christos Tzolis between his strikes on an incredible evening for the Missouri-born striker.

Speaking to the Norwich City club cameras after his scintillating display, Sargent said: “Never a bad thing to get a couple of goals. And the team performed very well. The fans were amazing. So it was a good night.”

Sargent made the switch to England in early August when he left recently-relegated German outfit Werder Bremen for a fee rumored to be in the region of $11m. The hard-working frontman netted 13 times in 72 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen before his decision to seek out a new challenge.

The fiery-haired forward had only seen 13 minutes of Premier League action for his new employers before he was handed an opportunity to make the team from the start against the Cherries on Tuesday and Sargent took his chance with both hands.

After his impactful performance in the Carabao Cup, Sargent will hope to force his way into Daniel Farke’s XI for Norwich’s next Premier League test against Leicester City this weekend.

Directly after that date with the Foxes, Sargent will be aiming to join up with the USMNT squad having been called up by head coach Gregg Berhalter.

The USMNT will play its first three 2022 World Cup qualifiers at El Salvador (Sept. 2), home against Canada (Sept. 5) and then at Honduras (Sept. 8). Sargent has hit five goals in 16 previous appearances for the USA.
