New York Red Bulls follow up their midweek trip to Columbus with another stiff test on the road at Inter Miami on Friday evening, where another day of disappointment looks possible against their resurgent hosts.
After a taxing spell at the start of the campaign, Inter have emerged from the fog of underperformance to string some impressive results together and suddenly Miami find themselves within touching distance of the playoff line.
Coach Phil Neville and his players have turned the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale into….well….a fortress, where Inter have won five MLS fixtures on the bounce. Their 1-0 win over Columbus Crew in their last outing there was swung in their favor by star turn Gonzalo Higuain, who snapped a five-game dry spell with his first-half effort.
The victory was complemented by Inter Miami’s third successive clean sheet and their new-found robustness at the back should come in useful against a New York Red Bulls outfit that have been notoriously toothless this season.
NYRB’s poor finishing in the final third has been a hot topic of conversation in 2021 and despite ranking near the top in the MLS for average attempts per game (14), Gerhard Struber’s charges are near the bottom for average shots on target (3.9).
The Red Bulls have won just once in ten attempts in the MLS ahead of their away-day double-header this week and with their confidence on the wane, they could hardly be meeting a fired-up Inter at a more inopportune time.
