Pacers Coaches In-charge
The Pacers have had 13 different head coaches over the years. In 1967, when the club was still in the ABA, Larry Staverman was the franchise’s first coach. With 529 victories in his 12 seasons with the club, coach Bobby Leonard holds the record for most wins in franchise history. After Leonard, Dr. Jack Ramsay, Jack McKinney, George Irvine, and Jack McKinney.
Moreover, when Ramsay unexpectedly left in 1988 following the team’s poor start, Mel Daniels, a Pacers icon, took over for two games until Irvine returning for another 20. The Pacers went through another bad run under Dick Versace before Bob Hill brought them back into the playoffs and into contention. The Pacers hired Larry Brown in 1993. And he led the team to several playoff games as Reggie Miller developed into a superstar and future Hall of Famer.

Furthermore, Larry Bird took over as coach in 1997 and stayed with the squad until 2000. In the 1999–2000 season, Bird led the Pacers to their lone NBA Finals trip.
The Pacers’ top three coaches were Isiah Thomas, Rick Carlisle, and Jim O’Brien. Frank Vogel was the Pacers’ most current head coach until May 5, 2016, when his term was not renewed after the Pacers lost game 7 of the 2016 NBA Playoffs to the Toronto Raptors, who were in second.
As a result, assistant head coach Nate McMillan elevates to the position of head coach. McMillan and the club part ways on August 26, 2020, just two weeks after the organization announces that he had been re-signed, after four seasons in which he had a 183-136 record.
Additionally, Nate Bjorkgren, a former Toronto Raptors assistant coach, became the team’s next head coach on October 20, 2020. Bjorkgren’s lone season with the Pacers ended in a 34–38 record, with the club missing the playoffs. Rick Carlisle gets back by the Pacers for a second term as head coach on June 24, 2021.
In 2021, which former Pacers might be good additions?
The Indiana Pacers have the potential to be successful next season if they make the correct moves in the offseason of 2021. Besides, the Pacers are only a few pieces – and health – away from contending, with a quality roster that includes a two-time All-Star in Domantas Sabonis, a number of scoring threats on offense, and a DPOY candidate in Myles Turner.
Given their lack of cap space and willingness to sell important players, some of the moves they need to make will be difficult. However, the Pacers will be left with some issues on both sides of the court if they refuse to transfer Sabonis or Turner in the assumption that Rick Carlisle can somehow make it work. The best option for Indiana to improve this summer is to trade one of their centers for a more NBA-ready player and add wing depth. However, it is not the end of the story if the Pacers opt to maintain both big men and add complementary pieces around them.
Instead of spending huge money on free agents who can change the franchise’s trajectory. What if the Pacers try to re-sign some old friends? There are a few veterans that spent time in Indiana who might be key players in 2021.
