10 most valuable U.S. soccer players according to Transfermarkt

The demand for U.S. soccer players is on the rise and with the country’s production lines whizzing into overdrive, more and more American footballers are being recruited by the world’s elite clubs.

In recent seasons, some of European football’s biggest institutions have splashed millions of dollars on a number of prodigious U.S. stars who have shot to prominence in high-class divisions like the Bundesliga, Serie A, and the Eredivisie in the Netherlands – but with rising demand comes rising prices.

Transfermarkt has long been the online authority for accurate transfer fees and shifting values and below, we’ve dug through some of their data to find the 10 most valuable U.S. soccer players today.

Check out our rundown below.

10 most valuable U.S. soccer players according to Transfermarkt

10. Daryl Dike

Transfermarkt value: $11m

Club: Orlando City

Age: 21

Position: Striker

Oklahoma-born attacker Daryl Dike exploded onto the MLS scene in 2020 with a string of dynamic goal-scoring performers for Orlando City, though it was his loan move to English Championship outfit Barnsley in February this year that saw his valuation spike.

The 21-year-old hit nine goals in 19 league appearances for the Tykes and his displays in Yorkshire put him on the radar of West Brom, who are rumored to be working on a deal to bring Dike to England on a permanent basis.

9. Brenden Aaronson

Transfermarkt value: $11m

Club: Red Bull Salzburg

Age: 20

Position: Attacking midfielder

New Jersey native Aaronson, nicknamed “the Medford Messi” for his creative and technical play, quickly forged a reputation as one to watch following his debut for Philadelphia Union in 2019 and it wasn’t long before some of Europe’s heavyweight clubs started sniffing around.

In January earlier this year, Aaronson was snapped up by New York Red Bulls’ sister club RB Salzburg, who shelled out the highest ever transfer fee paid for an American homegrown player from MLS ($6m rising to $9m) to bring the 20-year-old to Austria.

8. Timothy Weah

Transfermarkt value: $13.2m

Club: Lille

Age: 21

Position: Wide attacker

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Timothy Weah honed his skills with the NY Red Bulls before he left to join the PSG academy in France back in 2014. With first-team chances limited in Paris, Weah switched Ligue 1 clubs in 2019, signing for Lille for $11m.

Injuries restricted Weah’s involvement initially, though the 21-year-old made 37 appearances for Les Dogues in their title-winning 2020/21 season, leading to an increase in his Transfermarkt value. Weah’s price tag is expected to climb even further this year, with a more prominent role in Lille’s starting XI up for grabs.

7. John Brooks

Transfermarkt value: $15.4m

Club: Wolfsburg

Age: 28

Position: Centre-back

According to Transfermarkt, Wolfsburg paid $18.7m to sign towering defender John Brooks from Hertha Berlin in May 2017, though that decision to bring the center-half to the Volkswagen Arena has proven to be a smart piece of business.

Brooks has been a key performer at Wolfsburg over the last few seasons, helping to transform the team from perennial underachievers to regular continental qualifiers. The 28-year-old is also an established member of the USMNT who has won 43 international caps for his country.

6. Yunus Musah

Transfermarkt value: $16.5m

Club: Valencia

Age: 18

Position: Attacking midfielder

Wonderkid Yunus Musah has been one of the most rapid-risers on Transfermarkt over the past 12 months with his suggested price tag almost tripling in valuation following his breakout year with Valencia.

Born in New York City, Musah spent time in Italy and with Arsenal’s academy in England before taking his silky skills to Spain and Valencia, where his exciting displays on the flanks have made him a cult hero with the Los Che supporters.

5. Tyler Adams

Transfermarkt value: $22m

Club: RB Leipzig

Age: 22

Position: Right-back, defensive midfielder

Every inch a Red Bull alumnus, versatile performer Tyler Adams was schooled in New Yorke RB’s famed academy system before he was sold on to the franchise’s flagship club RB Leipzig in Germany in January 2019 for just $2.89m.

Since moving to the Bundesliga, Adams’ stock has risen considerably and the 22-year-old has established himself as a first-choice staple in the Leipzig team. Adams has also developed into a Champions League regular for Die Roten Bullen, which in turn has seen his Transfermarkt valuation rocket.

4. Weston McKennie

Transfermarkt value: $27.5m

Club: Juventus

Age: 22

Position: Midfielder

All-action midfielder Weston McKennie made the most of his tough Texan soccer schooling before moving to Germany’s Schalke 04 in 2016, though the 22-year-old can currently be found marauding the pitches in Serie A following his big-money switch to Juventus in 2020.

McKennie’s love of a tackle and eye for a pass has made him a fan favorite in Turin and his career is certain to remain on its vertical trajectory under returning Old Lady legend Max Allegri this season.

3. Sergiño Dest

Transfermarkt value: $33m

Club: Barcelona

Age: 20

Position: Right-back

Sergiño Dest made history in October 2020 when he became the first player from the United States to represent Barcelona in a competitive fixture, just a year after he had turned out to make his debut for boyhood club Ajax in the Netherlands.

The 20-year-old’s incredible progress is a testament to his world-class potential and having already made it to an elite-level club at such a tender age, Dest is expected to develop into one of soccer’s biggest names in lightning quick time. Expect his Transfermarkt value to soar accordingly.

2. Giovanni Reyna

Transfermarkt value: $41.8m

Club: Borussia Dortmund

Age: 18

Position: Attacking midfielder

Plucked from the New York City FC ranks by Borussia Dortmund in 2019, it didn’t take Giovanni Reyna long to make a splash in Germany following his debut for BVB in January 2020.

Armed with bone-twisting close control, an eye for a line-breaking pass and razor-sharp finishing, Reyna is considered among the brightest prospects in a Dortmund team heavily dusted with potential superstars.

Reyna didn’t cost Dortmund a single cent when he joined them two years ago, though there is every chance that the schemer will be a $100m player when they decide to cash in on him later on in his career.

1. Christian Pulisic

Transfermarkt value: $55m

Club: Chelsea

Age: 22

Position: Attacking midfielder

The most expensive American player of all time, Christian Pulisic broke records when big-spending Premier League side Chelsea forked out an eye-watering $70.4m to wrangle the creative midfielder away from the wonderkid factory at Borussia Dortmund.

Considered the face of U.S soccer and branded “Captain America” by his USMNT teammates, Pulisic has already achieved iconic status in his homeland and the 22-year-old is expected to be a key member of Chelsea’s squad under Thomas Tuchel in 2021/22.
